Things To Do and Days out.......

If your idea of a holiday is to sit beside a pool with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other, soaking up the sun, or you want to spend all day sitting in a bar, then that is fine. It is after all YOUR holiday. but there are places to go and things to see which can be well worth getting to and we recommend that you do visit Crete sometime during your stay!

Down the hill and to the east are a few nice beaches, these are in the form of sandy coves, there is also Star Beach which is more of an entertainment centre than anything else, but it good for children if you have brought the family with you. Further to the east is Stalida which has a wide sandy beach, and much, much further is is Potamos behind the Malia Palace archaeological site, but even this is easy to get to as the buses run past it during the summer months. On many of the beaches you will find sunbeds/umbrellas and these you have to pay for, but many of them belong to the bar/taverna behind you so if you are ordering from them you usually get the sun beds for free. Even if you do not want to use the sun beds you can still use the beach as it is public.
To the west are also a number of small beaches such as Gorgon and Golden Beaches

It would be nice to think that everyone is interested in history, but we know that is not true, but a day out in Heraklion never goes amiss and you can visit the Museum and Knossos on one ticket very easily in a day and still have time for lunch. In the centre of Heraklion around Lion Square there are a number of small streets, and in them you will find some excellent shopping opportunities, as well as a some very cheap but good places to eat.
The Museum of Crete on the coast road has an excellent display of material to do with Crete through the ages, and a bit further along is the Natural History Museum which is also good for children.
If you are on the way to Heraklion by bus you will surely pass the signs for the Aquarium and Dinosauria both of which are excellent.

If you do nothing else then visit the Palace at Malia, the buses go straight past the door, it is like a mini Knossos, and there is a very good taverna close by.
